giving thanks. day 5. november 5.

Day 5 | Home
I'm so thankful to live in a beautiful home that has heat and AC... a place where memories are made... we can fellowship with friends... a safe place to come home after a long day... surrounded by beautiful scenery... and with lots of wiggle room. So much more than I deserve. And I sure love the people in it. Thankful. Here are some photos that show you what I mean. :)

Day 4 | my church
I know that there are many great churches. But, I'm so thankful to be a part of James River Assembly... a church that is active, growing, changing, where the truth is preached, and lost people are being brought to Jesus. People are being raised up to share Jesus around the world... and there is active involvement in international missions projects and opportunities. I'm currently involved in the worship department and youth department. God is doing great things. I'm so thankful to be a part of it. It's exciting to live for Jesus. :)

giving thanks. day 3. november 3.

Day 3 | USA
Yes. I am proud to be an American. Despite all this country's shortcomings, I'm thankful to live in a country where I can be who I was created to be, where soldiers serve to protect me rather than harm me, where I can dream a big dream and see it come true, where I can read my Bible, pray, and go to church without fear of being persecuted, imprisoned, or killed, where beauty can be found from the atlantic to the pacific. Yes. I am thankful for this country. :)

Day 2 | Family
This is a family photo from last Christmas. I so dearly love my family. No... we aren't perfect. We each have our flaws and challenges, but we sure know that we love each other... more than words can say. "I love you" is a common yet very meaningful phrase around our home. I'm so very blessed and absolutely love to spend time with my family. They are my best friends. Family vacations/trips are the best! :) I know everyone can't say this about their families. May I never take them for granted.

giving thanks. day 1. november 1.

Day 1 | Salvation
Because of Him- I am abundantly free.

Okay. I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here to share 25 days of what I am thankful for. :) Such a healthy thing to do.

To start things off- I'm first and foremost thankful for salvation through Jesus's death and resurrection for me and you. Because of Him, I live each day with hope and purpose.

Psalm 103:3-5, 10
"He forgives your sins—every one.
He heals your diseases—every one.
He redeems you from hell—saves your life!
He crowns you with love and mercy—a paradise crown.
He wraps you in goodness—beauty eternal.
He renews your youth—you're always young in his presence.
He doesn't treat us as our sins deserve,
nor pay us back in full for our wrongs."

My heart is forever grateful.

I've been reading...

Well, it has been way too long since I have written a blog post. These past couple of months have been insanely busy. But, I have still been doing my best to make time to read. This is a recent book that I have read... I just love T.D. Jakes' writing style... so, I thought I would give you my thoughts on the book. :)

I would say that the first 2/3 of the book deals with a lot of life-controlling issues that many ladies face- from relationships to abuse to loss, etc. I was unable to relate to many of the issues discussed, but I know people in my life who could relate... and I'm sure that you do as well. It's healthy to be aware of these things to be able to impart wisdom to others, even if it does not directly apply to you. These are the issues that many times keep ladies in the shadows and out of the potential that God has placed within them.

The parallel was made between a leading lady in a play or performance and being a leading lady in your life... hence, "out of the shadows and into the light." The 3rd part of the book began talking about dreaming impossible dreams as you move past your life that has been holding you back. T.D. Jakes used examples of leading ladies in the Bible... instances where God did the impossible... as well as being a good steward of God-given dreams. In the last portion of the book, he wrote a lot about not only being a leading lady for your own life but rather for the purpose of leaving a legacy that would be significant for those following you.

Here are a few quotes from the book that stood out to me.
"Sometimes His promise for us is so much more, so much bigger, than we could ever imagine. To limit ourselves to the aspirations of human musings is to obstruct the limitless potential that our Creator has instilled in us. We must trust that God knows how far to take us, and let Him carry us that that place He ordains. We must be willing to let go of our dreams and remain open to receiving what our Lord chooses to give."

"For the work you accomplish can be undone, the dishes will be dirtied again, the floors muddied. But you cannot take away the indelible memories of time with your Lord, your children, or with those in need. Those gifts establish a legacy that continues long after the last supper is eaten and the last carpet is vacuumed."

"What sacrifices are you willing to make today so that you will have greater resources [not just financial] out of which to give in the future?"

"But the enemy wants to trick you out of these legacy moments by selling you a cheap bowl of soup. If the devil can distract you from the issues of eternal consequence through the use of the urgent, then he can leave the rest to you."

"While what you do onstage is notable and noble, what really counts is what remains when the show is over. What do you have left when the lights go down?"

I've been reading...

This was my first experience reading a Joyce Meyer book, and it took me a very long time to get through it (like 2 months!). Although she is an incredible lady, I had a hard time engaging in her writing style. The content was good, but I felt that it was somewhat unorganized. The overall theme of the book was making the choice to enjoy live no matter where the journey takes you. She covered topics such as simplicity, regret and dread, legalism, diversity, and waiting. Each page was full of Scriptural references, which is good! :) But, I think it kept the book from flowing as well. The chapter I was most able to connect with was called "Joy in God's Waiting Room". We all enjoy different writing styles, so even though this book was not my favorite read, it might be just what you need to hear.
Here are a couple of key points that were significant to me.

"Except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it..." Ps. 127:1 If God is not the builder of my life, my business, and my relationships, then there is no stability to any of it... because my work and labor is futile without Him.

"And God said [to Moses], 'I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim My name, THE LORD, before you; for I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy and loving-kindness on whom I will show mercy and loving-kindness. But... you cannot see My face, for no man shall see Me and live... Behold there is a place beside Me, and you shall stand upon the rock, and while My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by... Then I will take away My hand and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen." Exodus 33:18-23 This is an incredible passage to me. We can't always see what God is doing or when He is coming, but we know when He has been there... and can often sense when He is getting closer. God showed up "suddenly" and revealed His glory to Moses... it left Moses changed. By the radiance of his face, people could tell that God has passed by. Incredible.

pictures of a perfect {to me!} friday.

Today was seriously the best. So, I decided to semi-document it with photos. I completely took the day off and forgot about work and enjoyed some much-needed time with my sister. (and mom for part of the day!) I love them dearly, and even though I see them all the time- it has become rare to spend undivided time with them. Here is a walk through my day... with snapshots.
We started out with breakfast at Gailey's... a Friday tradition and one of my favorite restaurants! Unfortunately, Mom isn't in any of the photos. :( But, I love this one of me and my sis!

Oh how I love time at Hobby Lobby.... and I love how they are already celebrating Christmas! :)
CHRISTMAS! ;)

Looking all cool riding around town in my sister's shades. ;)

We then went to Target (no photo), where I bought a "cooling base/raised stand" for my laptop... I'm thinking it's going to be better for my back and neck since I'm on my computer so much! I also got a super fun headband with giant flowers that I can't wait to wear! :)

Then, of course, Michaels to look for more crafting supplies! :)

And, at my sister's request, and to my enjoyment- we made a trip to Redeemed...

and, of course, walked away some time later with a stack of books that I look forward to reading. :)

Made a trip to the mall... haven't been in FOREVER it seems... we just love walking around and talking and....

STARBUCKS! ;) [p.s. this photo was on the first try! wow!]

We bought a couple of awesome sale items at Charlotte Russe, and they gave us our choice of candy necklace or blow pop... okay? sure. :)

and dinner happened at BAMBU vietnamese! I love that place. Fresh spring roll. Lemongrass beef vermicelli. Avocado boba smoothie. YUM. :)

Then- we met up with my parents to see the movie "Letters to Juliet" at the Palace...

It was a precious love story... and there were some amazing shots of the Italian countryside! :)

To top it all off- I went home and ate a pear. I had one the other day, and it had been years since I've had one... I used to eat them all the time when I was a kid. mmm....
Today was great. Hope you enjoyed the recap. :)

keep it simple.

God has really been speaking to me lately about the need for simplicity. Last night, I read the following in a book I'm reading... thought I would share it with you.
"Simplicity in its essence demands neither a vow of poverty nor a life of rural homesteading. As an ethic of self-conscious material moderation, it can be practiced in cities and suburbs, townhouses and condominiums. It requires neither a log cabin nor a hairshirt but a deliberate ordering of priorities so as to distinguish between the necessary and superfluous, useful and wasteful, beautiful and vulgar." -David Shi

the "roundabout" way.

Even though we may know and believe that God speaks to us through His Word- we are often still surprised when He actually does. This morning as I spent some time praying, I really felt like I needed to hear something from God. As I opened my Bible to Psalm 105 in The Message version (part of my daily reading for today), I read something new. I would encourage you to do so as well.

At times I wonder if I should continue my involvement with worship team and choir because of my time commitment to youth. As I read that God instructs me to give Him praise and tell everyone of His goodness, it said one of the ways is through song. Even when we feel like we aren't doing something of eternal impact or significance, we actually may be. When people see me singing on the stage, I pray that they will see how much I love God... and that every word I sing is telling of His goodness. What a neat opportunity!

God also commands us to keep our eyes open to see God at work and His miracles. He has been true to His Word for generations. This SO goes against the grain in our culture. We have become so "Me" centered that throughout the day- that may be all that we think about... leaving no room or "margin" in our day to see that God is in fact working on our behalf or a reminder of how near He is... because we simply keep blinders on our eyes.

No matter who we are, He can choose to use us for His purposes. When His hand is upon our lives, there is no limit to what He can do. God sent Joseph ahead to prepare the way for the Israelites. Humble and hard beginnings led him to a place of honor and ultimately being used to carry out God's greater plan. God then used Moses and Aaron to deliver the Israelites out of Egypt. He worked many miracles as they were on their way and provided for their every need: cool for the day, light for the night, food and water to sustain them- in ways that only He could provide.

In the end- God's people were singing for joy. Every single step of the journey was so that they could accomplish all that He had told them and promised. This goes to show that God's ways are not our ways. Sometimes it truly is the roundabout way. Yes, His people had moments of doubt, complaining, and frustration, but they continued to follow Him.

As long as I'm committed to following God, I can trust that He will provide for my every need, equip me regardless of my inadequacies, and use every step of my journey to accomplish His purpose. That's the most important thing. The tough part is when the steps of the journey seem so contrary to the direction we feel like we should be going... the "roundabout" way. But, I'm okay with that... makes for one great adventure. :) His ideas are definitely best.

{kinda vague- but how I felt God was speaking to me today}

Loving | Leap Year

Currently and absolutely loving the movie "Leap Year". Beautiful scenery. Brilliant love story. Laughs. Tears. I love it. Kinda makes you realize that we don't always know what is best for us. I would highly recommend this one. :)

I've been reading...

This was such a powerful book that I would highly recommend that you read. I feel like I need to read it again right now just to be able to absorb all of it. I felt like it took me on a behind the scenes journey of God's love for me, and how and why I can translate that into my love for Him and others. Some key elements that John Ortberg covered were contentment in the desert, being chosen, how He searches for hiding people, and how He is the God of the roundabout way. Here are a couple of quotes that were significant to me.

"You have made us for yourself; and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in Thee." -Augustine

"This is the ineffable and infinite mercy of God which the slender capacity of man's heart cannot comprehend and much less utter- the unfathomable depth and burning zeal of God's love toward us." -martin luther

"Yes Lord [I love you.]," Peter answers. "Then feed my sheep," Jesus says. Love and teach and guard and guide and serve the little flock that means all the world to me. Get back in the game." -john ortberg

Now this is something I need to invest in for the summer... nothing like fresh fruit popsicles. And, I have never made my own... I'd say it's about time... do you have any good recipes/fruit combinations that I should try?! :) I found these on target.com.

sissy + me

Tonight I decided to stop what I was working on... and ended up spending about an hour in my sister's room just chilling. :) We just laid in her bed and talked and laughed and cried and it was beautiful. I need to do that more often... it's good for the soul. There's no one like a sister.

I've been reading...

So, I thought you might be interested in some mini reviews of the books I've been reading... there will be more to come, because I've finally fallen back in love with books. :) I will try to add a mini review each time I finish a book... a little reward to me and you. :) I know that summer is coming soon, and you might need a good read for the pool or beach. I'm currently about halfway through another really good book, so check back soon. :)

Jackie is also the author of the book, Lady in Waiting, if you have read that. This book was a really quick read for me (which is rare!). Jackie really captures the reader's attention as she compares and contrasts modern day "Boazes" with "Bozos". The scriptural foundation is the book of Ruth. Jackie explored several non-negotiable characteristics of a "man worth waiting for", such as emotional maturity and faithfulness, as well as practical ways to be a "woman worth waiting for". I believe this book could relate to ladies of all ages... but, it seems to apply to post-grad ladies better than most other "relationship" books I have read. It was a fresh perspective on relationships and would be great for a girls' small group study, as it has discussion questions at the end of each chapter. This was a powerful quote I took away from the book... definitely worth reading!

"It is that we find in Him, the fact of His existence and of His character, all that we can possibly want for everything. God is, must be, our answer to every question & every cry of need. If there is any lack in the One who has undertaken to save us, nothing supplementary we can do will avail to make it up; and if there is no lack in Him, then He of Himself and in Himself is enough."
-hannah whitall smith

I'm SO glad I read this book... I will warn you that it's definitely geared toward moms of young children. (which I'm sure I will be able to relate someday!) But, I was able to look past that aspect and apply it to my current work situation. The first half of the book focuses on "saving your sanity", while the second half of the book focuses on "preserving your profit". I felt like it was very thorough in its coverage of topics and details related to working from home. This is one of those books that you will want to read a chapter or two a day in order to implement and absorb the info... and I kept a highlighter handy the whole time. Some of the topics that were very useful to me were: negotiating deadlines, new definition of success, developing policies, life schedules, systematizing, outsourcing, retirement planning. Some information that would be useful to moms would include information about networking, childcare, and dinner planning. I would recommend this book to anyone who works from home, with or without children.

There were may aspects of this book that seemed common sense to me or that I've grown up hearing and learning. I love the perspective of a lady who was single until age 37 and all the details of living fully in every season of life. The characteristics of a woman of mystery are related to both single and married women. After all, shouldn't the mystery always be kept alive?! ;) This was another quick read for me... that's usually the case when I read books by female authors. She did a great job of describing how to embrace life while still making comfortable room for a man in your life. This was a powerful quote I took away from the book.

"He may delay because it would not be safe to give us at once what we ask: we are not ready for it. To give ere we could truly receive, would be to destroy the very heart and hope of prayer, to cease to be our Father. The delay itself may work to bring us nearer to our help, to increase the desire, perfect the prayer, and ripen the receptive condition." -george macdonald

Jesus loves me, this I know...

This is the view from my seat tonight and the sun sets... feeling like I have the best seat in the house... listening to the sound of the crashing waves and looking at the vast expanse of the ocean... in absolute awe... there is something about the ocean that makes you feel so near to God... and stand in such awe of Him at the very same moment. You guessed it... I'm on vacation... spending 10 days of relaxation in Florida. It's easy for one to feel guilty for taking time off... but, as I shared with a friend just the other day... I believe that vacation is absolutely necessary. And as I sit here at the ocean... I am reminded that some of my greatest vision and dreams for life have been the fruit of times away from the hustle and bustle of life.... when there is no agenda... nothing preoccupying your thoughts... and there is opportunity for sleep, rest, and refreshment... It brings clarity. And, I think that sometimes you don't realize how much you needed a break until you get one. These past couple of days have been incredible. So- I was walking by myself along the beach yesterday afternoon... splashing along and letting the sand squish beneath my toes.... when I said the silent prayer, "Lord, teach me something new about You... and I'll tell the world what I find." Now that seems like kind of a bold prayer... then, I go pick up the book "Love Beyond Reason" by John Ortberg... this could be a pretty neat journey... I'll let you be part of my "world". :) Yesterday my sister and I saw dolphins off the coast, and today we saw about 50 cownose sting rays [come to find out- they are migrating to Mexico and there could have been thousands of them!] and we didn't even have to go to sea world. :) I'm excited for the new things God is going to teach me this week, the visions and dreams He will place in my heart, and the rejuvenating He will give my body, mind, and spirit.
Signing off for now... here's what I've been up to as I've been writing... green tea in hand. :)
